There is no need to look to the filter of the brain to understand how to be in the body. Being in the body will guide us to be more harmonious with it without need of technique or mental understanding. To put a concept onto the body is a mistake.
I pray that all of the Zen folks will find a beautiful way to express themselves as they integrate their Zen artless art into everyday life. Bob Dylan learned from those old master folk singers, and then he took it and created something beautiful and relevant for his generation and today. Let us use this beautiful practice to find our expression, marrying the grit of the West with the sublime essence of Zen. And we’ll create a new culture to heal and save all beings.
We all have our normal breath. We walk around and there it is, anxious or relaxed, deep or shallow. In and out. I am trying to communicate about something like a second breath. The process of allowing reality to come to us is like having a second breath. This second breath, this light, creates our form in space. Our body. The more we align with it, the more we meld with the universe. It is there, filling us up. It is there all the time, without fail. It is not a technique. I found this, and it has never left me.
I first discovered this practice one night in college in Missoula, Montana. Aside from climbing rock and mountains, I was attempting to live a life which would overflow into the next On the Road. We were having a great time pushing ourselves in the outdoors and bars and streets of that beautiful rugged irreverently reverent Montana energy, and being really full of ourselves!
I have been in lots of workshops lately involving energy work, and in every workshop there are a couple of people going through some intense energetic issues. There are many forms that these issues take. From shaking, to headaches, ears ringing, incredible anxiousness, or spontaneous uncontrollable movements. I usually try to assure them that things can get better, and that these experiences are usually completely normal. As a side note, I have experienced all of the above sensations in my process. Many people in these workshops are there to learn a healing modality which will help them work through their stuff. And to hang out with people who are similarly tuned into energy. And these people often become exceptional healers themselves. Very gift
Lately, quite a few zen practitioners have asked me about breakthrough. Is it real? Is it possible? Does anyone really break through? What does it mean? I am writing this post to inspire those who have heard about breakthrough and find it mysterious and seemingly impossible. I am here to put my two cents in. To state that it is possible. It happens. I went through it, and If I could do it, then anyone with enough drive and honesty can do it too.
Long retreats, sitting from morning till night and sometimes through the night, in order to survive I had to begin to function in a new way. Instead if imposing my will onto my body which was in such pain, instead of moving from a place of going after enlightenment, energetic flow, huge states of mind, trying to make my suffering stop!, I began to allow something greater to come to me, to shift from doing to receiving. And it was so much better than anything my small brain could have created.
Where does energy end and form begin? What are these bodies? Why do they emerge? From where did they manifest? What is healing? What is medicine? The body is just an energy field. This is nothing new. I am asking that we look again, with fresh eyes, and attempt to explore it in a new way. This post is about the dialogue between form and emptiness, and I’d like to playfully explore how we might integrate them. For the past few years I’ve been studying a form of healing called Sourcepoint Therapy® and some of the concepts in it have inspired me to make some fascinating connections.
